How colours affect our Mood

Harmony Paints first produced their vibrant range of colours inspired by travel and places in The Mediterranean and the Middle East. Nubian for example was inspired by the colours used in the Nubian houses on the river Nile in Aswan, Esfahan was inspired by the beautiful turquoise colour of the mosque there. We wanted to bring back the essence of the feelings and emotions you feel when reminded of the places you visited on holiday.

Colours have long been known to affect the way we feel. Some colours are uplifting and can affect our moods in a positive way.

For example one of our most popular colours Aziz Pink is loved by both men and women. Despite appearing to be a very feminine colour. According to psychology pink is a colour of hope. Pink calms and reassures our emotional energies and can have a calming effect on the nerves.

Blue is another colour that has a calming effect. Another of our more popular colours Santorini is based on the domes found on the top of the houses in the Greek islands of Santorini . It’s a deep vibrant blue which has a deeply calming effect. According to psychology, it causes the body to create chemicals that have a calming effect on the mind. That coupled with the effect of recreating memories of holidays past.

Another of our more popular colours are Opulence and Aurora . Both are very dark Purples. We also have two other colours in the purple spectrum which is lighter – Mirage and Tranquility. Purple is a mixture of blue and red. According to psychology Purple is associated with wealth, mystery, royalty and imagination and has different connotations depending on one’s culture. In ancient times for example Alexander the Great and the kings of Egypt wore clothing coloured with the famous Tyrian purple which was made from snails (the history of which you can see in the video link. Thank goodness we can make paints with Eco friendly alternatives now.) Purple is often seen as representing wisdom and a connection to spirituality.

Warm colours including red, oranges and yellows such as Nubian, and Spice appear next to each other on the colour wheel and are all considered to be warm colours. They usually evoke feelings of optimism, energy and happiness.

Colder colours included blue, greens and purples and colours, like Barcelona and Mirage. These colours usually have a calming effect and if toned down also have a relaxing effect such as Verdigis or Esfahan.

Energizing colours are those which are highly pigmented.. Strong, bright vivd colours can have a powerful effect on our emotions They can make you feel invigorated, alert but it can also have the overwhelming effect of making your feel irritated if used too intensely. Energizing colours include colours like Aziz pink which is both calming but also invokes feelings of happiness and Abundance which has a stimulating effect and grabs your attention.

Earthy colours usually make people feel grounded and down to earth. They give a sense of stability and support which is why the majority of houses are painted in more traditional colours because most people feel safe and calm with traditional earthy colours. Some of the more earthy colours we produce include Spice, Terracotta, and Deep Saffron

Finally remember that all colours are subjective what might make one person feel happy and cheerful can make another person feel annoyed and angry depending on the persons past experiences or cultural differences. Either way it’s great to experiment with colour in your home. Try it and see how it makes you feel. You might be pleasantly surprised. If you would like to get some ideas you can see what some of the colours look like on our Instagram or Facebook pages or get inspired with some colour by ordering one of our colour charts
