How to Paint Kitchen Cupboards in Mineral or Chalk Paint Finishes

Thousands of people have old outdated laminate kitchens. The cost of installing brand new kitchens are exorbitant however many of these kitchen units are still functional and can last for years.

Even though they look outdated they can easily be updated with a brand new look and lick of paint. In fact, many of the newer modern kitchens are hand-painted so why not try your hand at upcycling your old tyred worn kitchen units and giving them a makeover.

In our step by step guide, we will show you how to make your drab laminate and wooden kitchen units go from boring to fabulous in 6 easy steps

Clean down all your cupboards with sugar soap or warm soapy water to ensure all grease and surface dirt is removed. This will ensure that the paint adheres properly and there is nothing on the surface that shouldn’t be there.

If painting on wood no sanding is necessary. Laminate however is shiny so give it a quick sand. This ensures there is a slight texture so that the paint will adhere better.

Remove any handles, Mask up any hinges or edges such as modern designs where there is a different border,

Apply paint with a roller or brush. If using a brush use a nylon synthetic brush this ensures minimal brush strokes, unlike a Chalk brush where you want to see brush strokes. You should get a nice smooth finish. If you apply with a roller avoid a foam type as this bubbles up, use a quality roller then brush out any bubbles immediately after with the nylon synthetic brush. If you work quickly you should get a perfect smooth brushstroke free finish. Work lightly and quickly and once the first coat is finished leave it. Better to apply one or two coats rather than one thick coat.
Leave to dry. Then apply a second coat.

For added protection apply a coat of Clear Coat varnish lacquer. Leave to cure properly for a few days especially if painting the doors on appliances such as dishwashers where steam might cause the paint to lift off. We would recommend you take off the door just to be sure and then refit. It won’t peel off once fully cure but better to be safe than sorry rather than have to repaint the whole door.

Enjoy your new lovely kitchen and celebrate how much money you have saved on not having to refit your whole kitchen. Remember you can also paint all the walls using Harmony Matt paints. We love to see the finished results so feel free to post your results on Instagram or Pinterest
