How to Paint Floorboards with Harmony Mineral Furniture Paint

Although in essence, our Furniture Paint is a Mineral paint it has the same Matt finish as a Chalk Paint and goes on smoothly and adheres to most surfaces. In addition, you do not need to sand, prime or use a sealer unless using on high traffic areas.

Painting all types and floors and floorboards is easy with Harmony Paints. Harmony paints Furniture Paints can be used on a number of materials. Always test it out first. For example, you can try it out on Concrete, Laminate, tiles etc. It is the perfect paint for painting on wooden floorboards.

Painting On Wooden Floorboards

If using on wooden floorboards but first you need to do a test to the area. Find a spot where there are some old stains. Some areas will show through more than othered depending on what caused the stain in the first place. Although our paints have high opacity it may take a few coats in order to cover the stain fully. Some areas such as those which had water damage may need more than 2 coats. So test out a couple of different areas before starting the project.

Once you have completed each test area then apply a coat of Clear Coat to each area so see if it draws out any of the stains. If you are happy with the result then you can continue with the project. Alternatively use a darker colour than you would have originally chosen as this will hide a multitude of sins. As much as you would like a very light floor if the original wooden flooring is in very poor condition and contains too many stains the only way to ensure the stains do not come through would be to either sand the whole floor back and/or apply a primer before using Harmony paint to ensure the stains do not come through.
Once all the prep work is done you are ready to apply your paint.

You can apply the paint by either roller or brush

Make sure the floors and clean. Use a mild soap water mix Never use any harsh chemicals when cleaning the floor for example bleach. Ensure the floor is completely dry

Apply the Furniture Paint with either a Roller or Brush. Apply in smooth strokes to ensure an even finish working your way from the furthest corner of the room to the nearest exit point so you do not have to walk on the floor.
We suggest you use 2 coats for flooring. Check the coverage on the tin to work out how many litres you need. There is a guide in our Data Sheets. You may find the second coat is more of a light coat.

Once the Paint is fully dry you can then apply 2 coats of Clear Coat. When you apply the Clearcoat it has a slightly milky finish. This will disappear once the varnish has dried. The varnish also has a slight sheen.

If you really want a heavy-duty finish you can apply any oil-based floor Varnish although this may yellow over time. Some people do prefer a traditional oil-based varnish for floors however the performance of water-based varnishes such as Clear Coat has substantially improved over the years and the advantage is that they do not yellow.
